5 Unique Museums of Maryland

Maryland has a lot of museums -- a LOT! From fine art to history, Maryland's museums cover an incredible variety of topics and ideas. Want to find an unusual place to visit the next time you have a free weekend? We've got a few picks that may be worth your time. Be sure to check the websites for hours, events, price changes, and COVID-19 policies.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine

What was it like to try to survive a battle during the Civil War? At this museum, you can find out. There are many artifacts from the Civil War housed here, and you can learn more about the way surgeries and medicine were handled during and after battles. There are also a variety of live streaming lectures and events for those who want to learn even more.

Frederick, MD. $9.50 for adults.

Calvert Marine Museum

This museum is fun for the whole family! You can find out all about the marine creatures that call Maryland home, and the ones that lived here millions of years ago. You can also learn all about boats, lighthouses, and even woodworking -- master craftspeople regularly show off their skills in the museum.

Solomons, MD. $9 for adults.

American Visionary Art Museum

Traditional art is turned on its head at this unique museum! The AVAM focuses on pieces that make you laugh, think, and see things from a completely new perspective. Strange and fabulous pieces need to be seen to be believed. Don't forget to stop by the huge and eclectic gift shop.

Baltimore, MD. $15.95 for adults.

Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum

Sports fans young and old will love this museum, which is where baseball legend George "Babe" Ruth was born in 1895, just blocks from Camden Yards. Whether you're a Babe Ruth superfan or you just want to know more about Baltimore's sports history (including the former Baltimore Colts), you'll have plenty to see here.

Baltimore, MD. $12 for adults.

Ocean City Life-Saving Museum

We think of Ocean City as fun in the sun, and we often take for granted the lifeguards that protect us while we enjoy our vacation. At this museum, you can learn about the amazing history of life-saving in Ocean City! You can also see local sea creatures enjoying their favorite foods in the aquarium room.

Ocean City, MD. $5 for adults.
