Maryland can be incredibly warm once the winter blues melt away and spring and summer make themselves at home. And if you're not the kind of person who loves hot weather, it can be a tough time to get through. But we know how to beat the heat! Try these locally-approved methods of cooling off.
1. Grab an ice cream cone!
Nothing helps us feel cooler than eating ice cream, and Maryland is pretty great at making the stuff. There are dozens of dairies and ice cream shops all over the state that are whipping up flavors from the classic (vanilla, anybody?) to the outrageous (think of the Chamery's Fear Factory series in which they make ice cream flavors that sound more like dares!). And of course there's everything in between. Here's a great beginner's guide to all of the incredible ice cream shops and creameries that the Old Line State has to offer.
2. Hit the water
Whether you prefer the ocean, lakes, rivers, or creeks, Maryland has you covered. A dip in the bracing Atlantic or a boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay can chase away the misery of a hot and humid Maryland day!
3. Hide inside
We can't all be outdoorsy, and that's just fine. There are so many museums, planetariums, local boutiques and bars, cafes, independent theaters, and historical sites that you can slip away into on the hottest days. Plenty of them offer air conditioning, and you'll get to experience some amazing local history or culture to boot.
4. Get some shade
Maryland's many state parks and trails offer an escape from the relentless rays of the sun! You can spend plenty of time in the shade and exploring the flora and fauna of the state when you spend your days hiking -- and then you can treat yourself to a nice shower after your day outside.
