Maryland Megalodon state shark shirt for fossil hunters, Chesapeake Bay lovers, and anyone who's ever walked the beach at Calvert Cliffs looking down. Millions of years before Maryland had crabs, rockfish, or Orange Crushes, it had a 60-foot predator with teeth the size of your hand patrolling the waters that would eventually become the Chesapeake Bay. The Megalodon called Maryland home for over 15 million years. That's a longer residency than any of us will ever have.
Today you can still find Megalodon teeth washing out of the Calvert Cliffs along the Bay, some of the same shoreline where kids and lifelong collectors have been hunting for generations. In 2023, a 9-year-old girl named Molly Sampson pulled a massive tooth from the freezing water in 10-degree weather. In 2022, a paleontologist found 53 teeth from a single Megalodon over six years at the same spot, and the whole discovery started because he stopped to help a baby deer stranded on the beach.
Maryland made the Megalodon its official state shark in 2026, the first state in the country to name one. Because of course we did. We had a prehistoric ocean monster living in our backyard for 15 million years and the teeth to prove it. That deserves a title.
