Labor Day weekend is typically seen as the end of summer and the start of fall (though if you want to get pedantic, that's not until September 22, and besides, with the way Maryland weather behaves, we could be seeing hot temps until October). Ready to give summer a last hurrah before you dive right into the fun of fall? Here are a few ideas.
1. Go for a hike
Sure, you can hike Maryland's many amazing trails any time of year, but late summer allows you to enjoy the long days and mild weather without the intense heat of midsummer. There's a trail in the mountains or by the shore waiting for you!
2. Pick fruit
This is a great time to grab plump, tasty fruits right from the bush! You can gather apples and raspberries at Larriland Farm or blackberries at Weber's Peachberry Farm.
3. Have a picnic
You can't really do this when the weather gets chilly -- and there's something so fun and free about eating outside on a blanket. Go with friends, your special somebody, or even just your dog! The fun is just in enjoying the fresh air and delicious snacks.
4. Pick some crabs
If you live in Maryland and didn't have a crab feast at any point during the summer, was it ever really summer? Grab some friends or family members and go in together on a bushel that you can all enjoy.
5. Make a kid's day
If you have a kiddo, a niece or nephew, a godchild, or a friend's kid that you really care about, do something special for them! After all, they just went back to school, and they'd love to be treated to ice cream or a snowball (and it's a great excuse for you to have one too).
6. Head to a baseball game
We'd love to see the O's in the World Series again, but even if we don't, nothing says goodbye to summer as fondly as a late-season baseball game. Grab a hot dog, scream O at the top of your lungs during the National Anthem, and soak up those late summer rays.
7. Hit the State Fair
It's in town through the second week of September, so why not enjoy it? Whether you're there for fried foods or fun rides, you can let your inner child roam free at the Timonium Fairgrounds and say goodbye to a great summer here in Maryland.
